Overview

Welcome to the Centre of Excellence for Gastrointestinal Inflammation and Immunity Research (CEGIIR), the home of the CEGIIR Research Project, the innovative multidisciplinary research centre, and the place to attract, retain and educate the best!

Gastrointestinal and liver disease affects 60% of Canadians at some time in their lives representing an economic burden of $100 billion dollars annually corresponding to approximately 50% of the total economic burden of illness in Canada! There is an immediate need to understand the genetic and environmental mechanisms and the molecular pathology for these disorders to provide better disease models and translational therapies.

CEGIIR is devoted to research on this world class problem, as to create benefits to Canada to improve quality of life and reduce economic burden. Our internationally recognized scientists and their outstanding research teams focus on inflammatory gastrointestinal disorders, non-ulcer dyspepsia, gastric infection with Helicobacter pylori, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), viral hepatic and biliary disorders, and their associated gastrointestinal cancers.

These diseases are linked by their initiation through an infections microbial agent and an analogous pathway of immune disruption, subsequent uncontrolled inflammation and tissue damage. Little is currently known about the underlying mechanisms that contribute to these inflammatory disorders, the progression to chronic disease, or the development of the related cancers. Our mission is to change this lack of understanding!

The Centre of Excellence for Gastrointestinal inflammation and immunity Research (CEGIIR) enhances Canada’s reputation in science and health through improved quality of Gastroenterology research, provides an infrastructure to attract scientists, improves training opportunities for students and HQPs, create jobs for Canadians, and has the potential to improve the health of Canadians through improved therapy, vaccines and treatments for gastrointestinal disorders.
